3/10/2008 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- A major from the United States Air Force Warfare Center was notified March 6 that she had been selected as a regional finalist in the White House Fellowship program.

Major Nicole Malachowski, USAFWC commander's action group deputy chief and Las Vegas native, will compete against a mix of 97 civilian and military regional finalists in a rigorous interview process scheduled for April 10 in San Francisco.

Thirty finalists will be selected to compete in a more in-depth interview process in June. Of the 30, President George W. Bush will select a handful of finalists for a one-year appointment as White House Fellows.

The White House Fellowship program was established as a non-partisan program in 1964 during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. The program provides extraordinary men and women the opportunity to experience working at the highest levels of the Federal government.

"I wanted to get out there and see our civilian counterparts," said Major Malachowski about why she applied for the program. There are a lot of great people who are serving our country even though they're not in uniform, said the major. "That's what makes this country great," she said.
